What to do before, during and after a flood

Before flooding

Check this app and official announcements before and during heavy rain; warnings can change quickly.
Keep drains and channels near your home clear of refuse. Do not pour waste into nullahs or stormwater drains.
Prepare an emergency kit: torch, battery radio, drinking water, medication and copies of important documents.
Identify your nearest temporary shelter or gathering point in advance using the map.
Move valuable items and electrical equipment away from floors that could flood.

During flooding

If a warning is issued for your area, follow the emergency route to a shelter or move to higher ground.
Never walk, swim or drive through moving flood water. A depth of 0.5 m can float a car.
Stay away from steep slopes, retaining walls, nullahs and the riverside cycle tracks.
Avoid touching electrical equipment or downed power lines.
Keep children and pets away from flood water and stormwater channels.

After flooding

Return home only when authorities say it is safe.
Wear protective clothing and wash hands thoroughly after contact with flood water or silt.
Do not eat food that has been in contact with flood water.
Report blocked drains, damaged channels or landslips to the Drainage Services Department.
